Protect Yourself

When you travel, things sometimes happen - like being delayed on the way to the airport because of a winter storm, or the airline misplacing your luggage, or missing a connection en route. Sometimes we suffer small accidents like a sprained ankle. or a small cut that requires stitches, which can result in a frustrating clinic visit and unexpected expenses. Being a responsible traveller and either verifying your existing coverage, or purchasing travel insurance, can protect you from many unforeseeable expenses - health related and otherwise - so why do so many Canadians continue to travel without it?

There are many reasons people say they don't need it... "I have health care coverage through work," or "my provincial health plan covers that," or "I am covered through my credit card." However, when you decline coverage thinking your work plan or credit card has your back, often times there is no coverage, or the exclusions surmount the covered risks. Hindsight is 20/20, but without a crystal ball, we never know - if the unexpected were to happen and you required medical care, are you prepared for the outcome?

Trip interruption insurance protects you from unforeseen expenses due to missed connections and delays, and can help you return home early if an unexpected emergency happens while you're away. Also, a few nights in a foreign hospital can get very expensive, very fast, and medical bills associated with longer stays can easily run into the tens of thousands of dollars. Not exactly something you want to think about when you are on vacation. The travel insurance you purchase from your travel agent protects you against these, and many other, unforeseen and unexpected events, allowing you to travel with confidence; just be sure to refer to your policy to ensure you are buying the plan that best suits your specific needs.

Fact of the matter is, here in Canada, because of our provincial health care, we're just not accustomed to seeing and/or paying our medical bills leaving most of us with no concept of the size of those bills. Consider this: do you have the means to pay a $10,000, or even a $40,000, medical bill? Would you be able to simply go to the bank and withdraw that volume of cash? The answer is probably 'no' for a great many of us, and these amounts wouldn't even cover the most basic costs of healthcare in many countries.

Simply put, if you are not taking the time to make sure you are properly protected, you expose yourself to a life-changing risk. For as little as $5 a day per person, it is possible to protect yourself against many of these common concerns Yes, it adds to the cost of your vacation, but it could be the best money you've ever spent.
